Deborah Schelkopf, DVM - Owner, Small Animal Veterinarian
A small animal practitioner and partner at Bethany Animal Hospital, Dr. Shelkopf received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois in 1974. As an undergraduate and as a veterinary student, she also worked part-time for a pet food company and at a research kennel facility, as well as assisting with research and histopathology at the College of Veterinary Medicine. In 1978, she was awarded her DVM degree by the University of Illinois.
Dr. Schelkopf practices general small animal medicine in addition to performing management responsibilities. She is a member of the DeKalb County Board of Health and several veterinary medicine associations. She considers the raising of her children, to whom she devotes as much time as possible, her most important achievements. She also enjoys reading, gardening and spending time with her family, her Labrador Retriever Katie, and cats Ronald and Mama.
Carlos Dominguez, DVM - Small Animal Veterinarian
Having received his undergraduate degree from Kansas State University in 1987, Dr. Dominguez was admitted to the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. After completing the four-year curriculum at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, he received his DVM degree in 1991.
Dr. Dominguez is a general small animal practitioner with special interests in orthopedic surgery and exotic animal medicine. Aside from his responsibilities at the hospital, he enjoys spending time with his four children, reading and playing a variety of sports.
Dr. Dominguez actively participates in several medical organizations, including the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Animal Hospital Association, the Northern Illinois Veterinary Medical Association, and the Association of Avian Veterinarians.
LeAnn Gruber, DVM - Small Animal Veterinarian
Dr. Gruber graduated from Western Illinois University in 1997 with a degree in biology and continued her education at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, from which she graduated in 2001. She joined the staff at Bethany Animal Hospital immediately after graduating.
A general small animal practitioner, Dr. Gruber's professional interests include companion animal medicine, soft tissue surgery and opthalmology.
Dr. Gruber's outside interests include walking, bicycling, crafts, bowling, baking and gardening. She particulary enjoys spending time with her family and friends and caring for her two cats, Reggie and Eli.
Kathy Clement, DVM - Small Animal Veterinarian
Associate veterinarian Katherine M. Clement joined Bethany Animal Hospital in April 2008. She attended Southern Illinois University and received her a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1986. In 1994, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign awarded Dr. Clement her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. She counts feline medicine among her veterinary professional interests and is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association, the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Feline Practioners.
Dr. Clement has three cats named Orange Kitty, Sunshine and Goblin. Her hobbies include gardening, jogging, biking, watercolor painting, colored pencil drawing and quilting.
Heather Brown, DVM - Small Animal Veterinarian
Having grown up in Buffalo, New York and northern New Jersey, Dr. Brown moved to Illinois with her family in 2004. She graduated from Clemson University in South Carolina with a degree in animal and veterinary sciences in 2006, and continued on to the University of Illinois, where she received her DVM degree in 2010. She is very excited to be part of the staff at Bethany Animal Hospital.
Dr. Brown is a small animal practitioner with a specific interest in dermatology, companion animal medicine, and exotic animal medicine. In her spare time, Dr. Brown teaches religious education to high school students at her church. She is also an avid sports enthusiast who plays softball and swims. Along with spending time with family and friends, Dr. Brown is always ready to play with her dog, Penny.
